March Senate Update

The current updates for the senate as of the end of March are the following.

Speaker Elections - The speaker elections will be taking place soon. Any senator in good standing can be appointed to run and serve as the next speaker.

End of Year Awards - The senate has received multiple emails regarding the awards as there have been numerous ties. If you have not voted yet, please do so so the ties can be broken.

Newly Elected Senators - At the last meeting, we announced the newly elected senators. To watch the recording, please look at our YouTube page. Congratulations to next year’s senate. We know that you will do amazing things!

Giving Day - WSA has promotional materials that can be used on our website. The Senate and House are competing in a contest to get the most pledges/ donations. The winner will receive some of the new WSA Swag.

Passed Referendums - This month, the Senate has passed multiple referendums.

  • Election Holiday Bill - Encourages WMU to view the election day as a holiday and excuse students in order to exercise their right to vote.

  • Menstrual Tax resolution - The Western Student Association shall support any legislation, including but not limited to pages C-5 and C-8 of Governor Whitmer’s proposed 2022 fiscal year budget, that mandates the elimination of all sales and use tax on menstrual hygiene products in the state of Michigan.

  • Carbon Neutrality Resolution - The Western Michigan University Student Body recommends that Western Michigan University accelerate WMU’s carbon neutrality target year from 2065 to no later than the year 2030, with a 45%-50% reduction achieved by 2025.
